Why Change Your Air Filter Regularly

When it comes to keeping your home comfortable and your HVAC system running efficiently, one of the simplest yet most important things you can do is regularly change your air filter.

Why air filters matter

Your HVAC system relies on air filters to remove dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles. A clean air filter protects your indoor air quality, and it also protects your system from unnecessary wear and tear. But when filters get dirty or clogged, they become a problem rather than a solution.

The cost of a dirty air filter

  • Restricted airflow: a dirty filter reduces airflow, making it harder for your system to heat or cool your home.
  • Increased energy bills: as your system works harder, it uses more energy.
  • Reduced comfort: uneven temperatures, longer cycles, and poor humidity control can all result from restricted airflow.
  • Shortened system lifespan: overworked components wear out faster, leading to more repairs.

Understanding MERV ratings and static pressure

Many homeowners choose high-MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) filters thinking they're getting better filtration—and they are. Higher MERV filters trap smaller particles. However, there's a tradeoff: static pressure.

  • High MERV means higher resistance. The denser the filter, the more it resists airflow, even when clean.
  • A dirty high-MERV filter causes big problems. As it loads up, static pressure rises sharply, choking airflow and stressing your blower motor.
  • System efficiency drops, and the risk of breakdowns rises, especially in systems not designed for high static pressure.

In short, using a high-MERV filter without regular changes can do more harm than good.

How often should you change your filter?

  • Standard 1" filters: change every month.
  • High-efficiency or HEPA filters: may need to be changed more often, especially if you have pets, allergies, or a lot of dust.
  • Check monthly: even if your filter is rated for 90 days, check it monthly during peak heating or cooling seasons.
